For 2009, the Apalachicola Riverkeeper is hosting the Wild and Scenic Environemental Film Festival (WSEFF) on Tour. The WSEFF, which is presented by Patagonia, is the largest environmental film festival in the U.S. The event is organized and hosted by the South Yuba River Citizens League.  For 26 years this grassroots environmental organization has been bringing their community together around the protection of the Yuba Watershed. The festival tour brings together the best of the home festival’s films. With a growing public awareness for the environment, the festival aims to increase this groundswell through inspiring and educational films which hopefully will motivate people to go out and make a difference in their community and around the world. Whether it is the struggle for environmental justice, information on renewable energy or an educational tale about an endangered species, the films expose people to forward-thinking ideas and global awareness. The films not only highlight concerns but provide solutions, reaching people through beautiful imagery like the sweeping landscapes of the Tallgrass Prairie or the grandeur of the the rivers around the world.

Tickets can be purchased online, by calling Apalachicola Riverkeeper at 850-653-8936, or at the door immediately preceding the event if tickets are still available. However, seating is limited so advanced purchases are recommended. Tickets can also be purchased at the Apalachicola Riverkeeper office. The office is open Monday-Friday during business hours and is located at 232-B Water Street, Apalachicola, FL.   For online purchase of tickets and more program information click on FILM FESTIVAL.

Grant Peeples and The New 76ers
Friday, October 30   8:00pm
Reserved seats $15.

Did you miss him in January?  If you have not yet heard Grant Peeples, now is your chance to enjoy his music and commentary.  His is a clean, but brooding American sound from a finger-in-your-eye songwriter. A biting, edgy, irreverent southern leftneck, articulate twang, thinking-man's songs. Environmental and socio-political themes.  He calls his music “alternative southern” or “outlaw country” – whatever it is, it is implicitly political, cultural and relevant. It’s all sung with Peeples’ commanding, seasoned voice. It’s a rough, edgy voice that works like a bucksaw on his recurrent themes of poverty, class struggle, hypocrisy and environmental ruin. From one song to the next, the mood shifts quickly from dark to comedic and back again.  Hear, see and read more about Grant on his website by clicking here GRANT PEEPLES.

"Grant is a master songwriter, using words like a Kerouac-style novelist." - The Florida Times Union

"Americana/country musician Grant Peeples is a storyteller - a modern-day minstrel in a baseball cap." - The Tallahassee Democrat

This trip Grant brings a folk-rock group with him called The New 76ers.  In one person's words, they "stole the show" at a recent Bob Dylan night in Tallahassee.  Bathed in southern musical heritage, their music will move you
physically and spiritually.  The group will open the show with a tribute to Bob Dylan, and then be joined on the stage by Grant and will spend the next 90 minutes performing together.  Don’t miss your chance to hear this brilliant, "outlaw country" songwriter and performer appear with this exciting group. Catch some of the group's music on their My Space site by clicking here.

"Last week-end I went to hear the Mayhaws at the Warehouse.  The surprise opening act was the New 76ers who were standing in front of the stage, nothing plugged in, no mic, and they owned the room." - Jim Crozier

"Now I’m thinking to myself boy this is really good.  My wife leaned over and whispered, “This is really good.”  It was settled, at least in my marriage, The New 76ers were really good.”   -Darren O’Dell:  A Concert Review of The New 76ers at Bob Night, American Legion Hall – Tallahassee, FL, 4.24.09
